Substance Use Disorder Q & A

What is substance use disorder?

Substance use disorder (SUD) means using harmful legal or illegal substances even though they have negative effects. Common examples include misuse of opioids, alcohol, benzodiazepines like Valium®, methamphetamines, and other illicit and prescription drugs.

SUD causes problems in one’s everyday life. In many cases, their days revolve around the substance and keeps them from living their normal lives.

What is opioid use disorder?

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is one of the most common types of substance use disorder. People with OUD struggle with opioids drugs that come from (or mimic) ingredients in the opium poppy plant.

Some people with OUD start taking opioids after an injury or surgery, using drugs as their doctor prescribes. Others get these drugs from acquaintances. Regardless, opioids are highly addictive and quickly can become a dangerous habit.

Withdrawal symptoms can make quitting opioids very difficult if you don’t have help.

What is alcohol use disorder?

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is another type of SUD. People with AUD struggle with their alcohol intake. Similar to OUD and other SUDs, people with AUD rely on their drug (alcohol, in this case) to get them through the day.

If you try to quit drinking “cold turkey,” without expert medical care, you could have dangerously severe withdrawal symptoms.

I have substance use disorder. What is treatment like?

At Pacific View Recovery, Dr. Mann provides full-spectrum treatment plans, customized to each person’s needs.

In most cases, treatment starts when Dr. Mann comes to you in the hospital. He provides expert support there, and then follows up with you at Pacific View Recovery and through telemedicine.

While SUD treatment is unique to every patient, most patients use the medication-assisted treatment (MAT) path to stay sober. With MAT, Dr. Mann provides and monitors the use of Vivitrol®, Suboxone®, and other addiction medicine drugs.

The main goals are to minimize cravings and reduce the risk of relapse. Some MAT drugs also reduce withdrawal symptoms.

Dr. Mann also helps you build a support system, develop coping skills, and take the right steps to maintain sobriety over the long term. He equips you with the tools you need to reach recovery and is always here for you when you need him through telemedicine and office visits.
